SMS-Vest — Smart Marine Safety Vest Ecosystem

About the Project

SMS-Vest (Smart Marine Safety Vest) is an innovative, low-cost safety ecosystem designed to protect traditional fishermen operating in GSM cellular dead zones. The project addresses the critical issue of maritime accidents and rescue delays by integrating wearable IoT technology with long-range radio networks and artificial intelligence.

The wearable vest is equipped with an ESP32 microcontroller, GPS u-blox NEO-M8N, MPU6050 accelerometer/gyroscope for fall and immobility detection, MAX30102 for heart rate and SpO₂ monitoring, DS18B20 for body/water temperature monitoring, and a water-immersion sensor. Telemetry data is transmitted via LoRa SX1262 (920 MHz) over distances of up to 25 km to a coastal gateway base station, bypassing the need for cellular networks. An AI-powered assistant (integrating the OpenAI API) processes the real-time physiological and environmental data on the base station server, identifying hypothermia risks, extreme fatigue, and emergency situations, immediately triggering automated rescue alerts with precise GPS coordinates for search and rescue operations.
